General Description of the Job Class Under the direction of the Associate Chief Pharmacy Officer for Retail and Specialty Pharmacy Services, assumes responsibility for the supervision and coordination of functions related to operations of the Duke Specialty Pharmacy, based in the Duke Cancer Center. Responsible for collaborating and implementing strategic goals and priorities and evaluating the quality and performance of the Duke Specialty Pharmacy. Oversees implementation and monitoring of appropriate key performance indicators related to specialty pharmacy accreditation and patient management program. Works with DUHS Pharmacy leadership to ensure alignment of specialty pharmacy programs with health system strategic goals.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Leads all operational aspects of specialty pharmacy programs including call center, shipping and prescription fulfillment.
Is proficient in the Willow Ambulatory pharmacy processing software as well as applicable point of sale systems and other technology driven workflow processes as appropriate.
Collaborates with Clinical Pharmacists and Pharmacy technicians to ensure appropriate documentation in accordance with patient management program expectations and/or applicable regulatory guidelines.
Leads unit level Duke Quality System huddles on a daily basis and escalates issues as appropriate.
Serves as Pharmacist-Manager of Duke Specialty Pharmacy as registered with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy.
Recruits, hires, trains and evaluates pharmacy personnel including, but not limited to, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and analysts.
Adheres to approved hospital and health system policies, standard practices of the profession and State and Federal laws.
Ensures that there is sufficient staff to provide excellent/efficient pharmacy services and makes specific assignments as appropriate.
All controlled substances usage is reviewed on a regular basis and discrepancies are resolved as soon as possible.
Provides drug information, including adverse drug reactions and contraindications.
Participates in QA activities within the department as well as throughout the hospital and health system.
Proactive in addressing issues or services requiring intradepartmental coordination. Actively promotes the use of the QIP process and tools in order to establish and atmosphere of continual improvement.
Adheres to the unit level operating budget.
Manages both the capital equipment and operational budgets and ensures that the operation of department is within budget guidelines and providing explanation of significant variances.
Required Qualifications at this Level Education:
Bachelors in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy required.
Experience:
At least 3 years of experience in a community pharmacy setting, with experience as a Pharmacist-Manager preferred.
At least 2 years of management experience in a health system setting preferred.
PGY-1/PGY-2 Pharmacy Residency training with focus on specialty pharmacy or pharmacy administration and leadership preferred.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:
Licensed or eligible to be licensed in North Carolina as a Pharmacist required.
Eligible to register as Pharmacist-Manager for Duke Specialty Pharmacy with North Carolina Board of Pharmacy preferred.
Licensure or eligible to be licensed in other states in the United States preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience in community pharmacy and possesses administrative and management skills. Great communication skills; Ability to motivate teams; Knowledge of Excel & Power point; Able to develop and manage relationships with customers; Experience planning and executing projects.
