Physical Requirements: This position is required to meet the physical standards as outlined on the OF 178 Certificate of Medical Examination. The position requires long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, pulling, assisting with transferring patients to wheelchairs/stretchers, cars, and transporting to other departments. The ED RN may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing/equipment in isolation situations or during day-to-day department functions and procedures. The ED RN must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The CDT ED RN will provide triage and nursing care to patients which includes but is not limited to cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, diabetes, GI conditions, renal conditions, substance abuse, psychiatric illness, and minor trauma with or without extenuating co-morbidities. Based on education, experience, and competencies, the ED RN may be assigned as a preceptor or charge nurse. The CDT ED RN is a complex role requiring flexibility and independent decision making as well as multi-focal collaboration with other members of the health care team. RN will understand that CDT may deploy into austere conditions which are defined as: various housing and living conditions to include non-climate controlled, limited privacy sleeping facilities (for example, cots, tents, \"hot-bunking\", gymnasiums, or similar), limited shower and laundry facilities, and limited feeding options (such as shelf-stable meals, meals-ready-to-eat, and field kitchens). Work may be performed in an office setting, indoor and outdoor field site, sometimes in adverse weather. CDT ED RN will be available to deploy with 72 hours notice within 2 windows of time per calendar year, for up to a month at a time. RN will continuously notify Supervisor of any constraints that may impact deployment to any event within 72 hours, including but not limited to any protected leave entitlements and/or reported injury or illness, by following Supervisor notification processes and VHA Human Resources practices. The CDT ED RN identifies patient care requirements by establishing personal rapport with patients and other persons in a position to understand care requirements; obtaining preliminary health history; making physical assessments, recognizing the range of 'normal' and other manifestations of common abnormalities; making appropriate consults to other team members and provides necessary service from assessment. The CDT ED RN assesses, obtains vital signs, starts IV's, obtains and evaluates lab results, performs 12 lead EKG's administers medications, and documents by policy and practice standards (CPRS). The ED RN prioritizes care and organizes the treatment plan from ED admission until disposition. RN will participate in CDT training activities and demonstrate readiness to apply professional skills to a range of emergency situations. CDT ED RN will ensure qualifications and required certifications are maintained, including Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), or Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification. RN will maintain CDT physical readiness requirements, vaccinations, and safety precautions related to infection control.
