Description
Research Faculty Position in Community Engaged Research Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine
The Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University announces a research faculty position to begin in Fall 2023 in community-engaged research. Community-engaged research centers around collaboration with community stakeholders to co-design, conduct, and disseminate research that benefits health and equity. Community engagement is a major area of study and practice for translational scientific research in the academic community of Feinberg School of Medicine, and a strong interest of many Chicago metropolitan and rural community stakeholders. We are particularly interested in applicants whose work addresses any of the following priorities as we seek to add to our strong portfolio of existing community engagement research and practice:
Science of community engagement
Using and testing innovative strategies for engaging community stakeholders
Structural factors and social determinants that affect community health
Implementation science
This is a non-tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Research Assistant or Research Associate Professor for candidates whose work focuses on community-engaged research. The new faculty member will be based within Northwestern’s Center for Community Health (CCH) (https://www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/sites/cch/), which leads efforts to promote and study community-engaged research throughout the institution. CCH brings together collaborative, multidisciplinary teams of scholars and community members to improve health in underserved communities through a shared commitment to health equity, innovation, and translational research.
The new faculty member will be a member of CCH’s infrastructure team that is supported by the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences (NUCATS) Institute. The CCH infrastructure team provides education, training, and consultation to research teams seeking to conduct community-engaged research. Additionally, the faculty member will be encouraged to develop their own independent research portfolio, with priority given to faculty working in the areas of maternal and child health, cardiovascular health, and diabetes. Research in the science of community engagement is also highly desirable. While there is no set formula for the amount of time spent between these two activities (CCH infrastructure team and one’s independent research), it is anticipated that the new faculty member will spend a minimum of 40% effort related to CCH infrastructure activities.
There are opportunities for teaching and leadership roles within the community health research concentration in Northwestern’s Program in Public Health (Master of Public Health: FeinbergSchool of Medicine: Northwestern University), and candidates should also emphasize experience teaching and mentoring graduate students, if applicable.
The faculty member’s academic appointment will reside in a Department within the Feinberg School of Medicine appropriate to the individual’s training. This position will report to Dr. Darius Tandon, CCH Director.
To apply, please submit a cover letter, the names and contact information of three references, a CV, and three writing examples. Writing examples may include peer-reviewed publications, media works, and opinion pieces. At least one writing sample should be a peer-reviewed article broadly related to the science or practice of community-engagedresearch and one writing sample should use lay language—for example, an example of sharing findings with community audiences or communications with project stakeholders. CCH community stakeholders will be a part of the interview process. Letters of recommendation may be requested at a later date.
Materials should be submitted to cch-admin@northwestern.edu. To ensure full consideration, please submit materials by March 31, 2023.
For more information, please contact Dr. Darius Tandon, Director, Center for Community Health at dtandon@northwestern.edu.
