The Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) is a licensed practitioner (RN) with certification in Diabetes Education. The CDE is skilled in the directing ADA7 Self Care Behavior modification. Although licensed and registered in the nursing practice, the CDE has broad based, in-depth knowledge of all aspects of Diabetes Disease State Management, including nutritional care, the role of physical activity in disease management, clinical monitoring, medication management, problem solving, coping and risk mitigation. The CDE uses individual patient outcomes to guide the intervention and improve care for the patients.
The CDE practices in accord with the philosophy of the standards of practice of the American Diabetic Association and of Salem Hospital’s Department of Diabetes Education and supports these methods of practice in accordance with the current standards established by governing agencies for diabetes care management.
Requires BSN or non-nursing Bachelor’s Degree with MSN. Bachelor of Arts in nursing also accepted.
Current unencumbered licensure to practice nursing in the State of Oregon required, or ability to obtain prior to date of hire.
BLS issued by the American Heart Association required.
American Diabetes Association – National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators – for Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) credential required.
