Acts as a representative of the Geisinger Health System, Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Program. Performs duties as assigned and provides care to athletes/patients in a preventive, emergency, and rehabilitative manner in accordance with Physician's orders, and documents such care and treatment in accordance with medical center's/ contracted organizations' policy. Assists in the development of and conducts educational and community programs that support the Orthopaedic service line. Work is typically performed in the clinical setting of an Orthopaedic physician’s office as well as athletics (on-site, indoors/ outdoors, at multiple athletic sites.
Reports directly to the Clinical Nurse Supervisor of Orthopaedics and Manager of Sports Medicine
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
Demonstrated ability to perform the following functions regarding athletic injuries: prevention, assessment, treatment, (including first aide), and reconditioning as set forth by the NATA Board of certification.
Demonstrated proper taping, bracing, and fitting of athletic equipment.
Demonstrated ability to carry out all prescribed treatments and recommendations by the team/program/event/family/treating physician
1. Normal anatomical structure and function.
2. Proper Evaluation/Assessment techniques for injury.
3. Casting, bracing & application of durable medical equipment
4. Administration of rehabilitation exercise and routines
5. Familiarity with computer based medical record keeping
6. Physiological demand and response to exercise.
7. Wound care
8. Normal biomechanical demands of exercise.
9. The various stages of injury response.
10. Musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and psychological demands placed on the patients.
11. Nutritional demands.
12. Contraindications and side effects of prescription and non-prescription medications.
13. Absorption, dissipation, and transmission of energy of varying materials. (i.e., protective padding).
14. The role of prescription and non-prescription medication in the immediate/emergency care of injury and illness and the rehabilitation process.
15. All indications and contraindications for known therapeutic modalities (i.e., ice, moist heat, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, joint mobilization, etc.).
16. Legal requirements and rules of the athletic/special/community events.
1. Underlying trauma.
2. Signs and symptoms of injury and illness.
3. Systemic and local metabolic failure
4. The psychological signs and symptoms of injuries and illness to which educated and legally able.
5. The effects of nutrition needs (i.e., fluid replacement, diabetic shock, balanced diet).
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s Degree in appropriate field required. Master’s Degree preferred.
Orthopedic Tech certified preferred.
Must be NATA BOC certified and possess or be in the process of acquiring licensure, certification or registration from the state of Pennsylvania.
Must be BLS CPR- AED certified.
Must complete Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance every two years.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is typically performed in the clinical setting of Orthopaedics.
Must be able to assist with or transfer patients of various weight/heights.
Must be able to push carts with equipment on them.
Must be able to sit/stand for long periods of time, have good mobility, manual dexterity, audio and visual acuity, and be able to walk long distances.
