This position provides operational and educational support to the School Health department by way of direct training and interaction with school nurses and school health nursing supervisors on all aspects of diabetes and related conditions affecting school nursing. This employee will work with School Health Management with the coordination, facilitation, and education of new nurses during their initial orientation as well as with existing school nurses, as deemed necessary. This position will also be responsible for tracking and maintaining various databases that contain diabetes statistics and communicating with others both within the Health Care District and within the community. This School Nurse Specialist will collaborate on a regular basis with school health administrators, supervisors and other program specialists to identify specific needs of the program, related but not limited to diabetes in efforts to accomplish goals and objectives in the areas of education and disease management through systemic planning, implementation and evaluation.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as a clinical resource, utilizing critical thinking skills to assist the school nursing supervisors and mentor school nurses in the planning and development of quality diabetic care and delivery of services in the school setting.
Remain certified, competent, and clinically current to care for patients when appropriate, and has the ability to teach school nurses and health room designees disease specific procedures or practices as needed.
Provide direct care when appropriate to students with complex health conditions to assist the school nurses or to demonstrate new equipment, processes or procedures for quality or learning purposes.
Assist school nurses in developing customer services skills and effective communication with health care providers, students and their families and appropriate school staff members.
Work closely with school nurses to ensure the best possible outcomes for students with diabetes and/or related health conditions, possibly including attendance at ESE/504 meetings.
Assist school nurses with diabetic assessments, case management processes, including care plan development, and medication/treatment management, in close collaboration with the nursing supervisors with a goal of improving students’ outcomes and educational success.
Maintain confidentiality of all student and staff health information.
Interact with the nursing supervisors on a regular basis, apprising them of nursing interactions and progress with their staff.
Lead and participate in the development and maintenance of interdisciplinary team planning and evaluation of patient-focused diabetic care at the clinical level.
Communicate with school health administration and the school nurse specialists on a regular basis regarding recommendations for instructional needs based upon clinical observations.
Collaborate with the school nurse education and clinical specialists in the process of orienting newly hired school nurses.
Display the ability to work in a constantly changing health care environment, participating constructively in change processes.
Participate in aspects of the supervisors’ meetings providing agenda items for clinical components of diabetic care.
Summarize individual program elements and provide appropriate data for reports and final reviews, as needed.
Participate on HCD and community clinical practice committees providing relevant input for learning and discussion.
Support the mission and core values of the Health Care District. Support the School District in the administration of student health services and interventions in the school setting.
Emergency duties may be required such as supporting administration in the staffing processes related to local or countywide disasters, natural or man-made. This nurse specialist has specific responsibilities to support school health directors and nursing supervisors in the deployment and clinical assignments of nurses in atypical roles and environments as required.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in nursing is required.
Experience: Pediatric nursing background and previous experience in school nursing is preferred.
Certification: Certification in diabetes’ education is required.
Licensure: State of Florida Registered Nurse license and valid Florida driver’s license are required.
